Medical Licensing Assessment — Applied Knowledge Test
Descriptions
The General Medical Council, the doctors’ professional regulator in the UK, is introducing a national Medical Licensing Assessment (MLA) to demonstrate that those who obtain registration with a licence to practise medicine can meet a common threshold for safe practice of medicine in the UK. There will be a staged implementation with the MLA fully established by 2023. When implemented, the MLA will assess thousands of candidates each year. The MLA will comprise 2 components to test candidates’ knowledge and the core knowledge, skills and behaviours needed to practise safely in the UK. These are an applied knowledge test (AKT) and a Clinical and Professional Skills Assessment (CPSA). It will be taken by UK medical students towards the end of their degree and international medical graduates, as part of the requirements to practise as a doctor in the UK.
