Navigation Colliery was built between 1907 and 1911 by Partridge Jones and company who owned a total of 9 collieries in the South Wales valleys. It was built as a model colliery; it was one of the first in Wales to be built primarily out of brick and is noted for its high quality buildings and up to date machinery. The mine was in production until the Colliery was closed in September 1967.In 2011 the sympathetic South Wales Building Preservation Trust (SWPT), took over the site from Pontypool Park Estates and is working closely with the local Trust (Glofa Navigation Trust), the Friends of Navigation Group and regional organisations, including Caerphilly County Borough Council, to bring the buildings back into beneficial use.Plans to save the historic Navigation Colliery in Crumlin have been given fresh hope with funding from the Welsh Government’s “Tranquil, Greener and Cleaner Places” grant scheme.Caerphilly County Borough Council, working with the South Wales Building Preservation Trust and local charitable group Glofa, has secured a grant towards a project to carry out essential ground investigation, remediation strategy work and general site improvements.Please note suppliers who bid for this work are required to be Safety Schemes In Procurement (SSIP) registered with one of the member registered scheme(s).
