Sport Ireland was established on 1 October 2015 under the Sport Ireland Act 2015 as the statutory body responsible for promoting and developing sport in Ireland. It merges the functions previously undertaken by the Irish Sports Council and the National Sports Campus Development Authority. Among Sport Ireland’s range of responsibilities are the following: •To encourage the promotion, development and co-ordination of competitive sport and the achievement of excellence in competitive sport•To develop strategies for increasing participation in recreational sport at national and local level and to coordinate their implementation by all bodies involved in promoting recreational sport and providing recreational facilities;•To develop and disseminate guidelines and codes of practice promoting best practice for the protection of children in sport;•To disseminate information concerning sport; and•To arrange for research to be conducted concerning sport.
