608 — Universal Testing Machine — Tribology.

Descriptions

Understanding the tribological properties of materials is key for the development of formulations which are designed to interact with or alter the properties of a surface. Tribology is extremely important in many industrial sectors from coatings and lubricants to healthcare and pharmaceuticals. Due to the wide range of applications, a flexible universal system for measuring the tribological properties is required to enhance the capability within the National Formulation Centre.A device is required for the measurement of properties such as the friction, lubrication and wear over a wide range of surface contact and environmental conditions. In addition, the in situ analysis of the test performed, such as the appearance of a wear scar or the acoustic emission of a progressive scratch, is critical to understand the mechanisms involved. This can then be used to develop a fundamental understanding of the processes involved, resulting in the ability to design enhanced performance formulations. The instrument required must be a flexible, bench top device with a high level of accuracy which can distinguish between small incremental changes in formulations. Parameters such as the temperature should be easily and accurately controlled and there must be options for measuring materials under liquid and dry conditions. A range of contact conditions and sizes much be accommodated. Please note that associated consumables will also be part of this contract.
