A Metrics Based Comparative Performance of Wales’ Science and Research Landscape

The Welsh Government Office for Science is developing a national evidence base from of a range of credible sources that will highlight the strength of Wales’ research and innovation performance focussing on output excellence, productivity and collaboration. This is intended to support Welsh Government’s Science for Wales’ strategic agenda, which is committed to growing and evaluating Wales’ research performance with a view to improving Welsh research effectivenessIn May 2018, Welsh Government Office for Science purchased a comprehensive data set comprising of a detailed bibliometric breakdown from the Scopus database that is owned by Elsevier (SciVal Data). The data set comprised the years 2000-2017.The objectives of this new tender are too:1.To undertake a comprehensive analysis of the Welsh Sci Val data, to profile the strength of Wales’ Science and Research base. This will include a comprehensive review and narrative of the Scientific Landscape of Wales at national level and benchmarked against comparative countries.2.To undertake an in depth analysis of the strengths of Wales Research and innovation and the impact of Wales’s Research collaborations at UK and International Level. This will also include a detailed breakdown of subject field analysis.3.To profile Wales’ Research and Innovation strengths from wider sources such as UKRI and REF, research council funding, IP and other university led data such as HEFCWThe output of this commission will be an independent credible published report that highlight Wales’s strengths mapped across where possible research and innovation TRLs.
