A Study to Review the Pembrokeshire Timber Store
Descriptions
A study to review the Pembrokeshire Timber Store.Pembrokeshire Timber is a Pembrokeshire County Council project that was developed in 1999 in partnership with Coed Cymru and Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority. It was a pilot project to demonstrate how small diameter and local timber can be used to develop a sustainable timber industry for the benefit of local businesses and customers, and in doing so improve the biodiversity value of Welsh woodlands and reduce our carbon footprint. The Pembrokeshire Timber Store was established to ensure a more reliable source of local timber that would meet the needs of local users and encourage land owners to actively manage their woodland. The increasing requirement for sustainable, locally sourced timber in construction to help meet BREEAM requirements has boosted demand.Further opportunity exists to add value to local timber based products, expanding the sector further and creating employment which will further reinforce the position of Welsh / Pembrokeshire Timber in the market place. The Pembrokeshire Timber Store is owned by Pembrokeshire County Council and run by the Regeneration Division within the Development Directorate. Dr Steven Jones is the Director of Development and the Head of Regeneration is Martin White. Two Pembrokeshire County Council staff members are employed at the store, one Timber Store Supervisor and one Timber Store Assistant. The Business Development Manager has direct line management responsibility for the administration of the two members of staff. The Coed Cymru Officer has responsibility for the strategic operation of the business and is line managed by Coed Cymru and Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority. The aim of the review is to test the current trading model of the Pembrokeshire Timber Store and develop a strategy for the future growth of the initiative. Pembrokeshire County Council wishes to commission a study to analyse the achievements of the Pembrokeshire Timber Store (PTS) and the next steps for development. The original aim of Pembrokeshire Timber Store was to provide a real diversification opportunity to woodland owners to realize economic and environmental benefit from the management of Welsh native woodlands.
