PHW Cardiff Microbiology now houses a Regional Mycology Unit. The Regional Mycology Unit provides expert technical and medical advice on a Local, Regional and All-Wales basis.In addition the Regional Mycology Unit is a member of the UK Clinical Mycology Network (UKCMN) and provides expert medical and technical advice on a national and international basis.The expansion of the Regional Mycology Unit has seen an increase in workload year on year since 2011, and demand for the service continues to increase. Due to the continued significant increases in workload the requirement for automation is essential and is demonstrated by the 63% increase in Aspergillus IgG workload from 2014 to 2015.This test is currently performed manually.The introduction of automation will enable the repertoire of tests offered by the unit to be increased, with the added potential to repatriate tests currently performed by other suppliers. Furthermore, it will provide the opportunity to increase the frequency of testing improving turn-around time and patient management.The use of automation will also provide service resilience and therefore negate a significant risk to the organisation which may result in a failure of routine services to our users at a local and All-Wales level.NOTE: The authority is using eTenderwales to carry out this procurement process.
