Anthropology Gallery Infrastructure Improvements.
Descriptions
The Horniman Museum & Gardens is planning a major redevelopment of its Anthropology Galleries, to be completed by the end of 2017. Through the creation of new, world-class displays, we will provide spaces better able to engage with the complexity and rapidly changing diversity of London's population, ensuring we remain at the heart of our London community and can respond to the challenges and opportunities presented by London as a global city. The redevelopment will span three existing gallery spaces, covering circa 700 square metres, over two floors within the Museum and the total works budget is circa 2.5 million GBP. The budget for infrastructure works is circa 520,000 GBP.We will undertake significant capital works to upgrade these two galleries at the heart of the Horniman including:— Improvements to the infrastructure of the historic South Hall, attending to damp walls and poor decoration, improving and replacing mechanical and electrical services so that environmental controls and gallery lighting are more effective and energy efficient.— Re-introduction of daylight into the South Hall. As highlighted in our Conservation Management Plan of 1997, lighting in the 1901 barrel vault roof galleries has suffered since daylight was removed in the 1980's and we intend to use recent developments in glass manufacture to reintroduce daylight into this historic space.— Exploiting the existing architectural features and the height of the 1901 gallery to display important larger objects, including suspending boats from the ceiling.— Reveal the original architecture of the 1912 Lecture hall, attending to damp walls and poor decoration, improving and replacing mechanical and electrical services and repurpose it as the new creative Studio Space. This contract is purely for the architectural and infrastructure improvements associated with the project, the exhibition design service will be tendered as a separate contract. It is anticipated that both teams will work together to realise the projectThe development of the galleries is dependent on securing a significant grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund. A Stage 1 pass in April 2014 will signal the beginning of the development phase, which will culminate in a Stage 2 submission in February 2015. This development phase will consist of working up the architectural designs to RIBA Stage D.If a Stage 2 pass is achieved, the scheme will then be worked through to final design and realisation.
