Awarded
Appointment of a Project Manager for the refurbishment of 3 Centenary Sqaure
Descriptions
The University of Birmingham is purchasing the city's iconic Old Municipal Bank with the intention of creating a flagship gateway to its Edgbaston campus. This Grade II listed building is in a prime position at the heart of the city's cultural and civic centre, sitting alongside the new retail headquarters for HSBC and opposite the new tramline, the re-developed Centenary Square, the Library of Birmingham, Symphony Hall and Baskerville House (home to the West Midlands Combined Authority and new Mayoral office). Plans for the building are still in development but it is likely to host a range of different activities and programmes from across the University. This will range from executive education and ministerial policy briefings, to public exhibitions and workshops for academics, charities and businesses. A welcoming café at the centre of the building will be complemented by private catering and dining for a wide range of events and conferences. An initial feasibility study was completed in April 2017 by a design team comprising of MAKE Architects, WSP (structural and services engineering) and Donald Insall (heritage). This outlined the potential for the building in terms of usage but also technical requirements in terms of services, structure, restoration and integration with adjacent land (including connecting to a shared subterranean car park at basement level).
