Proposed New Primary School at Shotton, FlintshireScope of the WorksThe works comprise the construction of a new primary school located in the town of Shotton, Flintshire. The creation of new primary school will replace the existing infant and junior schools and provide modern facilities for delivering the curriculum in the 21st century.The works will be carried out in two phases. Phase 1 is the construction of the new primary school and associated external works. Phase 2 involves the demolition of the existing junior school located on the same site, and remodelling of the new school play areas and car park.The accommodation to be provided in the new building will include a nursery, 7 classrooms, assembly hall, studio, kitchen and community facilities.The proposed capacity for the school is 240 pupils plus 30 nursery pupils.Externally the proposed works include hard and soft landscaped play and recreation areas for the pupils, paved paths new car park and eco woodland garden..The new School building will be single storey and all the principal spaces will require adequate natural lighting and ventilation with ancillary heat recovery and mechanical ventilation.The form of construction for the schools will be chosen on the basis of the optimisation of energy use and comfort levels for the building occupants.Key factors to be considered in this respect are high levels of insulation, thermal mass, solar gain, passive ventilation and orientation.The building will be required to be highly serviced but the issue of sustainability will need to be adequately addressed though service controls, occupancy sensing and recycling in order to contribute to low energy design.Environmental impact and optimum life cycle expectancy will also be important factors in determining the choice of construction materials with locally sourced materials being used where feasible. The issues of waste reduction and recycling will need to be addressed as appropriate.It is a mandatory requirement of the Welsh Assembly Government that the new building achieves a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating and an energy performance certificate ‘A’. A BREEAM assessor has been appointed.
