Blaenavon World Heritage Site 10 Year Anniversary Concert

Descriptions

The purpose of this contract is to commission a lead consultant who will co-ordinate and project manage the development and delivery of an open air concert at Blaenavon Ironworks to be held on two consecutive nights – Friday 10th and Saturday 11th September 2010. The purpose of the concert is to bring together the community of Blaenavon to celebrate 10 years of Blaenavon World Heritage Site Status. It is envisaged that the development of final proposals for the concert will be prepared under the direction and supervision of a lead consultant. They will be responsible for the quality of contributions and the performance of other such specialist consultants. It is likely that a multi -disciplinary team will need to be assembled to meet the various requirements of the brief. There are three key elements to the commission:i)Creative DirectionThe successful consultant will be responsible for developing content, creative direction and managing the performance on both nights. The theme of the concert is to be developed as part of the commission. However, the concert must bring the story of Blaenavon’s past industrial heritage to life through music; historical re-enactments and performances; and pyrotechnical displays using the Ironworks historic features. The Ironworks will be brought to life through lighting and fireworks. The concert will conclude with a firework finale. Key to the success of the concert will be the involvement of organisations from within the town. Performances are therefore to be invited from organisations including Blaenavon Male Voice Choir, Blaenavon Town and Concert bands as well as local school children. A performance by the community ‘Gamelan’ (a Legacy Trust Project being developed by Head4Arts) will also need to be included. As part of the creative development the consultant will need to work with a preferred supplier – Chance Encounters. Chance Encounters is a Heritage Interpretation Theatre Company who has developed scripts for historic characters from Blaenavon’s industrial past. Chance Encounters have previously provided performances of these characters and have experience of working with the two local schools and are able to develop appropriate roles for the children. ii)InfrastructureTo identify and provide seating and staging layouts that maximise the number of seats available in the audience whilst also accommodating the staging requirements of each individual act performed. Seamless ease of movement between individual acts in the performance is to be paramount in determining staging layout. To provide all other infrastructure required for the concert over two nights including:?Staging?Seating (special attention to be given to considering removing hazards from the uneven floor surfaces throughout the Ironworks)?Lighting – performance and site safety?Sound?Stewarding of sufficient number to ensure spectator safety?Health and Safety Management?Risk Assessments?Park and Ride Facility?Toilet Facilities ?All Liaison with Cadw on site set up and use?Liaison with Torfaen CBC Event Safety Panel ?Pyrotechnical displays and lighting of historic features within the site.?Security during event preparationiii)Professional ArtistTo advise and source a professional artist for the evening that is in keeping with the theme of the event. It is intended that this act will add value to a successful concert without detracting from the main theme of the event. To accommodate and manage all aspects of the artist‘s requirements on both evenings.
