Boiler Relocation
Descriptions
This project is to strip out the existing north hall boilers and pipework and construct a new boiler house away from the building to house a new set of boilers. Install pipework externally connecting the new boiler house to the pump room and provide new BMS controls. Associated works include fencing, pathway repairs, fire stopping repairs, and electrical works. The Horniman museum recently launched its climate an ecology manifesto which includes becoming greenhouse gas (ghg) neutral by 2040. This project is the first stage in an ambitious set of (as yet unfunded) infrastructure improvements to move towards reduced greenhouse gas use. The new boiler house is co-located with the main museum chillers, which are sited outside of the museum building. Forming the connection between this location and the main museum building is the first step in developing a centralised energy distribution point for the estate. In the future this may include heat recovery plant and sustainable energy or heating. The heating pipework will run surface along our boundary fence line and will go through the ground at two points. The old boiler room in the museum building will be repurposed as a pump and valve room where the heat will be distributed to the heating circuits throughout the museum. The new boiler house is to be built within the perimeter footprint of the existing chiller enclosure, which will remain operational throughout, and will interconnect with an existing valve room for the chillers. Particular attention should be paid to health and safety and mitigating any risk to the grade II* listed building, public or staff. The north hall boilers provide heating to office spaces, and exhibition gallery spaces including the music gallery and temporary exhibition gallery. The music gallery has objects on open display that are sensitive to changes in the environment, therefore limiting boiler downtime is deemed essential for the successful completion of this project.
