Cardiff Met SU Equality & Diversity Training
Descriptions
At Cardiff Met Student Union (SU) we understand that it is imperative to examine good practice across sports in relation to preventing misogyny, homophobia, and racism, as well as actively encouraging and valuing diversity. This is also to be understood and implemented into the Students’ Union codes of conduct and adhered to by all SU Sport and SU Society members. As part of a Students’ Union research project based on the information given above, a focus group took place with numerous different members to understand the inner workings of SU Sports clubs and SU Societies. The research theme for this project was ‘changing the culture’, this is where you as a company come in.The focus group found that there was a need to address certain rituals or cultures within the SU clubs and SU societies, as well as offer education within areas that often haven’t been talked about or acknowledged in the past.Key Themes found:- ‘Drinking culture’- a big part of the sporting clubs, however there was a general consensus that there has been a shift towards a reduction of tolerance with it.- ‘We are diverse’- Clubs saying that they are inclusive and diverse, but not having any proof of diversity within their sports teams.- ‘Unconscious bias’- the majority of the group were White British; this was brought up as a potential barrier for improving inclusion and diversity.- ‘Crowd control’- Issues with spectators and the way they conduct themselves at sporting events and pitch side etiquette.- ‘Active bystander’- Being confident enough to call out unacceptable behaviour, not passing it off as ‘banter’.We would like a bespoke set of workshops covering the main themes that were identified as issues within our focus group. As well as this, we would like one directed at SU Sports clubs and one directed to SU societies, both of which have their own cultures. This is the first time that a training programme of this kind has been attempted to be implemented by the SU, so it is imperative that we find the correct fit for our SU and what we stand for. When is it required by:The plan is to deliver 4 different sessions of these bespoke workshops, for both SU sports clubs and SU societies together. This would take place during the introductory period that our other key workshops are held, ahead of the academic teaching period.NOTE: To register your interest in this notice and obtain any additional information please visit the Sell2Wales Web Site at https://www.sell2wales.gov.wales/Search/Search_Switch.aspx?ID=124277.
