Descriptions

The Oil and Pipelines Agency (OPA) currently run 2 separate underground storage depots located within Cheshire. Plumley PSD consists of 35 underground storage caverns each averaging 90 000 m3 in size located around 250 m below ground level in the salt strata. Cape of Good Hope (CoGH) site consists of two larger caverns (approx. 500 000 m3 total volume) situated 1km from the main site. Both CoGH caverns contain crude oil and a number of the Plumley caverns contain hydrocarbons including crude oil and a number of the Plumley caverns contain hydrocarbons including crude oil, petroleum and diesel. These caverns were originally solution mined in the 1950's and used for storage of hydrocarbons until the mid-1980's. It was decided that the storage capacity was no longer required and therefore a number of caverns have contained hydrocarbons since mothballing.
