Command of the Oceans: Project Manager.

Descriptions

The Historic Dockyard, Chatham, UK is a large heritage site with over 100 buildings and structures including 47 scheduled ancient monuments and 53 listed historic buildings - 12 at Grade I and 32 at Grade II. The site sits at the heart of a wider Chatham Dockyard and its Defences Site - first placed on the UK Government's tentative World Heritage Site List in 1998 and re-affirmed in 2011.The Chatham Historic Dockyard Trust follows an overarching strategy of preservation through reuse, bringing the Historic Dockyard's buildings and structures back into new uses as museum / visitor attractions and as places where people live and work. The Trust interprets the site through museum galleries and historic ships, is a charging museum and visitor attraction visited by over 150 000 people annually, delivers award-winning learning and activity programmes and supports its objectives through associated trading.Command of the Oceans is an extremely important project that will unlock the potential of the Historic Dockyard to become the heart of the Chatham Dockyard and its Defences tentative World Heritage Site, addressing key access, interpretation and promotion needs identified in the Chatham Dockyard and its Defences Management Plan whilst providing solutions to pressing conservation and interpretation issues at The Historic Dockyard. Key aims of the project are:i) More people learn about the history and role of the Chatham Dockyard and its Defences world-defining navlal and military heritage, understand its significance and importance today, and care for its future preservation and use.ii) Chatham Dockyard and its Defences, with the Historic Dockyard at its heart, becomes a new focus for community pride and identity, playing a major role in the local tourism economy and regeneration of Medway.iii) Significant 'at risk' scheduled monuments and associated archaeology at the Historic Dockyard, including mast ponds and the 'ship beneath the floor' archaeological find, are conserved, interpreted and given new life through the creation of a new Chatham Dockyard and its Defences Discovery Centre for developing learning, understanding and participation in Chatham's naval and military heritage.iv) More local people become users of, visitors to and active participants in Chatham's naval and military heritage and support their future preservation and use.v) CHDT's leadership role is extended locally, spreading the benefit of its skills, knowledge and experience to support the development and resilience of the less well-resourced charitable trusts and volunteer organisations engaged with the Chatham Dockyard and its Defences heritage sites.
