Kilkenny County Council has identified the need to engage the services of a suitably qualified and experienced Conservation Team to prepare a Conservation Plan for the Built Heritage on the Abbey Quarter (former Smithwicks Brewery site) in Kilkenny City. Objective 3J of the Kilkenny City & Environs Development Plan outlines an objective “...To prepare a Heritage Conservation Plan for St. Francis Abbey, Evans’ Turret and St. Francis’ Well in the context of the existing City Wall conservation plan in conjunction with the Heritage Council, the Office of Public Works, the National Monuments Service, the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht and other relevant stakeholders.”The conservation team will be lead by a Conservation Architect (Project Lead) and as a minimum will include a Grade 1 Conservation Architect, supported by a Conservation Structural Engineer and an ecologist. Kilkenny County Council has retained the services of a Project Archaeologist, Archaeological Management Solutions, for the implementation of the Abbey Quarter Masterplan – this project archaeologist will be incorporated onto the Conservation Team and he shall provide specialist archaeological services to the Conservation Team.
