Bookstack 1 North is the height of a six storey building. However, only the ground floor and the top floor are present as “true” structures with the four intervening floors being effectively platform construction supported by the full (5 storey height) shelving.Unfortunately, whilst the arrangement is interesting it has issues of health and safety; fire protection and asbestos. The asbestos will be removed prior to the main contract. The main contract will include, upgrade of the fire barriers; a water mist fire suppression system; electrical installations including fire detection; installation of new floor panels and finishes and other associated works.The existing shelving will be retained. This is recognised to be of historic interest.Whilst Bookstack 1 North will be the dedicated contractor site the remainder of the Library’s estate will remain in operationProgramme: Intended start on Site February 2018: completion May 2018The winning bidder will need to demonstrate that they have the capability and standing to undertake this important project.
