Bookstack 1 North is a purpose built library / archive building for the storage of documents. It is a 6 storey building however the first five storeys have no floor of traditional construction and are fully occupied by a metal shelving system, on which the intermediate floors are supported.The floor construction is a panel system within a steel framework, the original floor panels are asbestos insulation board finished with a linoleum sheet. Lighting, power, and heating services are integrated into the shelving system.Enabling worksPrior to the refurbishment work the National Library shall carry out enabling work comprising the removal of all the asbestos floor panels. The whole of the existing lighting system will also be removed as the cabling is closely installed to the floor system.The existing fire detection system is retained.The Refurbishment WorksNo work is included to the sixth floor area.The refurbishment works are targeted at two main objectives:A. Improving the fire precautions to the space.B. Installing a non-asbestos containing replacement floor panel system.General Building Work Scope• Replacement of the floor panels and finishes.• Upgrading existing fire doors and replacement of sub-standard doors.• Introduction of automation to doors and access control.• Creating a workstation on each level within a redundant book lift.• Re-decoration.• Fire stopping of services penetrations.• External works associated with new fire suppression installations.Electrical and Mechanical ServicesComplete replacement of lighting, small power, and data installations.The installation of a high pressure water mist fire suppression system and associated plant and equipment.ProcurementThe majority of the works are procured on a ‘traditional’ basis.The fire suppression system is to be designed by the contractor (contractor design portion).
