Contractor Information Session for Caernarfon Castle Kings Gate Project

Cadw, the Welsh Government’s historic environment service, is looking to enhance the visitor experience at Caernarfon Castle focusing on increasing accessibility and a state-of-the-art immersive experience for the King’s Gate.The proposals include:1. First ever level access to the upper embattlements of any similar UK World Heritage site, providing a unique experience for those with mobility issues.2. Developing imaginative, interactive and immersive experiences e.g. virtual reality.3. Significant conservation works to the gate4. A lightweight, glazed lift to gain access throughout King’s Gate leading to a new viewing deck atop the Gate5. Educational and event space6. Accessible toilet facilities7. The provision of a light snack and refreshments area8. Increased and improved retail space within the King’s Gate Tower areaThe project will include high quality fixtures, fittings and finishes throughout, using pre-fabrication wherever possible, particularly given the logistical challenges which the project presents.Cadw are looking for contractors with experience of working in challenging locations, interfacing with members of the public and with expertise in a broad variety of works, including conservation skills. Consortia bids will be accepted, as will bids from contractors who can demonstrate that they have the supply chain to deliver all aspects of the project.The Welsh language will form an important part of the project, with contractors expected to have a Welsh speaker on site at all times and to utilise Welsh contractors and suppliers wherever possible.Cadw will be holding a Meet the Buyer event on Tuesday 12th February 2019 at 12.00pm at Caernarfon Castle which will be an opportunity to meet members of the project team, including from Cadw and the design consultants, to discuss the project informally and to assist contractors in deciding whether the project is suitable for their skill set.Contractors wishing to attend should contact caernarfon@buttress.net to reserve their place with the name(s) and position(s) of those who will be attending.
