Deganwy Castle - Rock stabilisation works

Descriptions

Title of the Contract Deganwy Castle Slope StabilisationDescription of the ContractCadw are seeking to appoint a contractor to undertake the design and installation of slope stabilisation measures to protect Deganwy Castle. Works are to be undertaken on and adjacent scheduled land of significant local and national heritage. The remains of Deganwy Castle are located across two mounds, that form the top of a wider hill, some 100 metres above the village of Deganwy in north Wales. The land adjacent the monument is agricultural pasture land enclosed within the Scheduled Area. The masonry remnants of the castle are located toward the western perimeter of the western mound and towards the southern perimeter of the eastern mound. The slopes in these areas are largely of bare and ivy-covered rock which form near vertical cliff faces. The intersection of continuous joint sets defines columnar blocks and wedges adversely oriented out of the cliff face, which form potential rockfall hazard areas that pose a risk to the ongoing stability of the castle remains. The works will require the contractor to stabilise parts of the cliff faces below the masonry sections by installation of rock bolts. The contractor will be required to design and install a stabilisation scheme that addresses the stability issues at the site whilst taking due account of the archaeological sensitivity of the monument and the aesthetic quality of the wider site area. It is anticipated that the use of roped access equipment will be necessary to facilitate the installation of the slope stabilisation measures.
