Design, Fabrication and Installation of New Auditorium Chairs at Newbridge Memorial Hall

Descriptions

Caerphilly County Borough Council on behalf of the Trustees of the Celynen Collieries and Newbridge Memorial Hall require the Design, Fabrication and Installation of New Auditorium Chairs at Newbridge Memorial HallNewbridge Memorial Hall (also known as ‘The Memo’) is recognised as one of the town’s key public buildings which, along with the adjacent Institute make up a group of buildings known as Celynen Collieries’Institute and Memorial Hall. The Celynen Collieries’ Institute and Memorial Hall is located on a prominent corner of Newbridge town centre where Meredith Terrace meets the High Street. Access to the buildings is normally from Meredith Terrace where the link block accommodates a communal entrance serving both the Institute and Memorial Hall. The Memorial Hall building contains a ballroom on the ground floor with a large auditorium on the floor above. The auditorium was designed and built as both a theatre and a cinema. The interior is an exceptionally important survival as it has remained largely unchanged since 1924. The Memorial Hall is Grade II* listed by Cadw ‘for its unusually high quality and well-preserved cinema interior, amongst the best interiors of any workingmen’s hall in Wales’. The auditorium closed in 1972, but the Ballroom has continued in use.The adjacent Institute opened in 1908 and is Grade II listed. The Institute was built with a Library, Reading and Billiard rooms and has been a social club since the 1960’s. The re-development of the Institute was the first phase of the works and has been completed. The Institute has been improved and a new link building has been constructed, enabling access for all users to all parts of both buildings. This will conserve the building for the future, improve the urban and environmental impact of it, and enable easy access and a wider range of activities to take place. The second Phase of the conservation project will focus on the repair and restoration of the Memorial Hall and is currently underway and will finish in September 2014, to coincide with the centenary of the First World War.The supply and installation of the chairs to the Stalls and Balcony of the Memo’s auditorium will be the final piece in the jigsaw to bring the Memo back to full use.The new chairs will have a major impact on the visual and historic integrity of the completed auditorium as well as on the visitor experience (comfort etc). The high standard of aesthetic and practical quality of the final product expected by the client must not therefore be under-estimated.NOTE: To register your interest in this notice and obtain any additional information please visit the Sell2Wales Web Site at http://www.sell2wales.gov.uk/Search/Search_Switch.aspx?ID=9024.
