Earthworks - A46 Newark Bypass Improvement Scheme

The A46 Newark Bypass is a complex major infrastructure improvement scheme being developed by National Highways to widen the A46 to dual carriageway from the Farndon Roundabout to the Winthorpe Roundabout. Skanska are currently preparing the scheme budget for National Highways, and wish to engage with the supply chain to support this budget pricing exercise. Below summary of the 0600.01 - Earthworks package: Of the approximate 6.5k length of the route upgrade, approximately 5km of the route involves the widening of the existing carriageway on embankment through the flood plain of the River Trent with embankment heights ranging from 2m to 12m. The overall earthworks content of the project includes: a) Topsoil strip to the existing infrastructure on embankments. b) Approximately 900,000m3 of embankment fill including a mix of imported materials (Potentially local gravels, PFA or recycled materials) and won on site materials. c) Establishment and management of borrow pits to extract material from the west end of the project and transport along the existing route to the embankment areas. d) Disposal of surplus inert materials on site and offsite including arisings from piling operations and ground improvement works. e) Backfill to a number of substantial structures embankments with 6N / 6P material. f) Transporting materials to specialist suppliers of reinforced earth retaining walls and steep / geotextile reinforced embankments. g) Resoiling of completed embankments and verges in line with the completion programme.
