Tower Hamlets has the highest premature death rates in London, with high levels of poverty and deprivation which is linked to high rate of smoking, poorer diet than elsewhere, lower levels of physical activity and high levels of problem drinking in those who drink. These in turn link to very high premature death rates from heart disease and stroke, cancer (particularly lung cancer), lung disease and liver disease.Health trainers provide the foundation of the support that Public Health provide to people in the community to live healthier lives. Health trainers work on an individual basis with people within their community. Individual assessment is carried out on lifestyle, support individualised goals setting to lead a healthier lifestyle and help achieve those goals through specific health trainer organised activities (e.g. group fitness, healthy eating activities, accessing local leisure services and healthy walks) or referral to both local healthy lives services e.g. smoking cessation and to wider services e.g. debt and benefits advice.The Public Health Department at London Borough of Tower Hamlets wishes to commission suitable providers to continue provision of the Health Trainers Programme, split into 4 lots based on geographic areas which are comprised of clusters of wards.
