Fire Assessment Support to MoD

Descriptions

The project is tasked with the receipt of two flasks (the single module flask (SMF) and the neutron source container (NSC)) into an Active Handling Facility at NNL Windscale. The flasks will contain MOD reactor fuel for post irradiation examination (PIE). Unlike most fuel received into the facility this fuel must be horizontally posted into the cave system. Such imports have not been undertaken for almost a decade and a new import process is being developed. As part of the design process, fault identification has identified the need for an assessment of the possible impact of a fire on the operations being undertaken.
