Food Standards Agency — FS411019 Field testing of the use of INTAKE24 in a sample of young people an

Descriptions

The Food Standards Agency in Scotland (FSAS) has the remit to monitor the dietary intake of adults and children living in Scotland and to measure progress towards the Scottish Dietary Goals and commitments within Supporting Healthy Choices. FSAS identified the need to explore how technological improvements may be utilised to improve assessment of dietary intakes in the Scottish population. As a result of this FSAS commissioned a project in 2012 to develop a new computerised 24 hr dietary recall system for estimating the dietary intake of older children and young adults (11-24 years) living in Scotland. The on line tool, INTAKE24 has been developed over the past 2 years by a team from the University of Newcastle. The design of the on line tool used an iterative process involving several rounds of user testing in 11-24 year olds. Following development of the tool a relative validation against interviewer led methodology was carried out. The methods showed good agreement, intakes of energy and macro-nutrients were within 1 percent on average. The INTAKE24 dietary assessment tool allows rapid generation of detailed quantitative nutrition data on foods and nutrients consumed in the previous 24 hours. This therefore provides us with a timely means of obtaining detailed dietary data. Furthermore, the on line system has additional advantages because the recalls can be conducted quickly at a time and place convenient for the participant and for much of the population it will not require the input of an interviewer. Tenders are invited to carry out a survey to test the use of the INTAKE24 on-line 24 hour dietary recall programme in the field by collecting dietary intake data (excluding salt intake) from a representative sample of the Scottish population aged 11+ using the existing Scottish health Survey ( SHeS) sampling framework.
