Descriptions
The newly established laboratory at SU for synthesis and characterisation of novel magnetic and superconducting materials specialises in solid-state and solution based methodologies.Synthetic approaches include in vacuo solid-state synthesis, gas transport reactions, reactions under inert atmosphere as well as in various solvents. Many manipulations should be performed using protective atmosphere. Detailed structure and microstructure of various inclusion compounds, alloys and nanomaterials are in the focus of investigation as well as magnetic and thermal properties. The group has strong interest in investigation unstable water and air sensitive material and intermediates as well as modern technology for energy production, storage and conversion. In order to accomplish this, particularly focussing on the need for materials characterisation, the group full access to the following items of equipment:Multi-throughput bench top SEM with EDSMulti-sample automated hardness indenterMulti-sample laser flash system to measure thermal diffusivityMulti-sample Thermogravimetry (TGA) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC)Multi-material pushrod dilatometerChemical laboratory equipped with glassware for manipulation under inert protective atmosphere. To assist in the synthesis of novel materials and construction of energy storage devices, two glove-boxes are essential to the College activities.
