The contract is for a turn-key composite manufacturing press facility to enable research into high-volume processing of structural composites for automotive light-weighting. The facility will significantly increase composite press-forming capacity in terms of component size and press tonnage at WMG and provide the additional capability to manufacture parts using high-pressure resin transfer moulding (HP-RTM). The press facility must have suitable controls and instrumentation for stamp-forming/compression-moulding of thermoplastic and thermoset composite materials and also capable of running HP-RTM processes. The HP-RTM dosing/mixing line must be suitable for processing both polyurethane and epoxy polymer resin systems and enable the inclusion of a mould release compound into the resin system (e.g. a so-called 3+1 system).The facility will be comprised of 3 principal components:a) Circa 800t instrumented hydraulic press + ancillaries;b) Instrumented flat plaque tooling for HP-RTM process;c) HP-RTM dosing/mixing equipment.
