Awarded

High-end Tribrid mass spectrometers.

Descriptions

The Francis Crick Institute (the Crick) is a biomedical discovery institute dedicated to understanding the scientific mechanisms of living things. Its work is helping to understand why disease develops and to find new ways to treat, diagnose and prevent illnesses such as cancer, heart disease, stroke, infections and neurodegenerative diseases. By bringing together scientists from many disciplines, the Crick will help to improve people's lives and keep the UK at the forefront of innovation in medical research, attracting high-value investment and strengthening the economy. The Francis Crick Institute intends to acquire two high-end Tribrid mass spectrometers to expand its analytical capabilities in the areas of proteomics and metabolomics. The instruments will be managed by the existing Francis Crick Institute Proteomics Science and Technology Platform that currently houses seven high-end mass spectrometers and nine experienced staff. The main purpose of the instruments is to support proteomics applications such as the high-throughput quantitative analysis of Post-Translational Modifications (PTMs), the deep mining of global or subcellular proteomes and the analysis of higher order structural properties of proteins and protein complexes. In terms of mass accuracy, scan speed and flexibility the new Tribrid instrumentation will out-perform the platform's current mass spectrometry systems. Each instrument is to be configured with a mass analyser capable of delivering 500 000 resolution and mass accuracies typical of a Fourier transform mass analyser. Further, the instruments must be capable of trapping ions and performing secondary or higher order fragmentation. To further facilitate PTM analysis a diverse range of fragmentation options such as Collision Induced Dissociation (CID), High Energy Collisional Dissociation (HCD) and Electron Transfer Dissociation (ETD) will be available.
