Immersive sensorimotor laboratory equipment
Descriptions
"The University of Plymouth is looking procure immersive sensorimotor laboratory equipment, consisting of an integrated system involving a treadmill capable of being perturbed in multiple directions and coupled with a visually immersive environment. This will be commissioned within the Brain Research & Imaging Centre (BRIC). The system will need to be integrated with a 3D motion analysis functionality and the treadmill will need to include an embedded force plate to allow the assessment of movement kinematics and kinetics. The system will need to be capable of integrating other inputs (eg electromyography) and triggering other sensory stimuli (eg muscle vibration / galvanic vestibular stimulation). Background: Sensori-motor control requires the integration of multiple sensory information to control the multi-linked musculo-skeletal system via descending pathways from the brain. Walking and balance are two examples of functional activities that are commonly affected by central and peripheral neurological damage. Understanding how walking and standing balance changes with alterations in sensory inputs, neurological damage and through rehabilitation requires a detailed analysis of movement combined with the ability to control sensory inputs and support surface characteristics to mimic real-world activities in a controlled laboratory based-environment.
