In accordance with the UN Basic Principles on the Use of Force and Firearms by Law Enforcement Officials General Provision 2, HMG is under an obligation to “…develop a range of means as broad as possible and equip law enforcement officials with various types of weapons and ammunition that would allow for a differentiated use of force…”. In this overall context the authorities are seeking information on possible alternative kinetic impact projectile systems.It is emphasised that this RFI should not be interpreted as meaning there are plans to discontinue the use of AEP. This is an information gathering exercise to support future direction and decision making in this area if suitable alternatives are identified.
