Magnox Site Specific Decommissioning Strategy Reference number: Magnox/LS/2020
Descriptions
Following the announcement by the NDA of a change of strategy in the approach to decommissioning the Magnox sites, Magnox is seeking early engagement with suppliers on how they can support delivery of this revised strategy. Magnox is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA), a non-departmental Government organisation, which is responsible for the decommissioning and remediation of 12 nuclear licensed sites. These include 10 Magnox reactor sites plus the Harwell and Winfrith research sites. The Magnox reactor sites are all now defueled and at various stages in their decommissioning journey. The Magnox mission is currently estimated to cost ~£20 billion and will take decades to complete. The NDA has announced its intention to change the current strategy for decommissioning the Magnox reactor sites from blanket deferral to site-specific strategies that take into account the unique features of each site. The new programme will start at the Trawsfynydd Site, with the intent to bring forward dismantling of the two reactors. Site-specific strategies for the other Magnox reactor sites will be developed over the next 12 to 18 months. Magnox is now looking for early engagement on how the supply chain can best support delivery of its mission in line with the new strategy. We would like to hear from suppliers, large and small on how, through working collaboratively, we can deliver greater value and efficiency for the UK taxpayer while maintaining the highest standards of safety and environmental performance. We are interested in innovative solutions, technology, partnering arrangements, delivery models etc. which will enable major project and programme delivery and site remediation. Magnox will be holding a supply chain engagement webinar on 20 October 2020 to explain the key challenges and requirements of the new strategy. Companies are invited to register for the event at https://bit.ly/3gW0ClS. Following the event, Magnox would like to hold 1:1 meetings with individual companies who would like to share their ideas on how we can deliver the mission safer, sooner and at better value. Further details on the arrangements for the 1:1 meetings will be provided during the webinar.
