The Donkey Sanctuary (TDS) was founded in 1969 by Dr Elisabeth Svendsen MBE, became a registered charity in 1973 and now operates under the governance of a sole corporate trustee, The Donkey Sanctuary Trustee Ltd.The charity’s work improves the lives of donkeys and mules in countries around the world through a combination of international branches, subsidiary entities, holding bases and collaborations with other like-minded organisations.We carry out a range of fundraising, donkey care and welfare, education, training, research and donkey-facilitated learning activities under 1 overarching global strategy: to transform the quality of life for donkeys, mules and people worldwide through greater understanding, collaboration and support and by promoting lasting, mutually life-enhancing relationships.
