Newport City Council is inviting tenders from appropriately qualified, experienced and resourced Conservation Architects to provide and lead a multi disciplinary team for the 'Delivery Stage' of the Market Arcade Townscape Heritage Scheme in Newport, Wales.The Scheme has recently completed project development with Heritage Lottery support under its Townscape Heritage Programme.The HLF has now confirmed £1.1 m funding for delivery, with Cadw approving an additional £60k 'in principle'. Newport City Council funding and owner contributions form the remaining project income.The project has secured Planning and Listed Building consent for development covering all units in the arcade.The project will be delivered as a, single, block scheme with owners accessing grant support on the agreement that the Council acts as agent in the delivery of the schemeThe Conservation Architect (and their team) will play the primary role in the technical design and delivery of capital works in line with Stages 4-7 (inclusive) of RIBA Plan of Work 2013.The project will restore architectural detail that is at risk, been lost or been compromised by unsympathetic alterations, reconnecting owners, traders and the wider community to the historic significance of the site and the role of the Market Arcade in the growth of Newport from the mid-19th century.In doing so, the project will redefine the Arcade’s purpose as a sustainable commercial attraction within the city’s conservation area, complementing strategic development in the immediate vicinity and the city as a whole.
