Market Arcade Townscape Heritage Scheme - Conservation Works

Newport City Council are issuing notice of intent to commence procurement of suitably qualified and experienced Conservation contractors to deliver the repair and restoration of the Market Arcade in Newport – the city’s oldest surviving arcade.The project will restore architectural detail that is at risk, been lost or compromised by unsympathetic alterations, reconnecting owners, traders and the wider community to the historic significance of the site and the role of the Market Arcade in the growth of Newport from the mid-19th century.Funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, Newport City Council, Cadw andindividual owners the Scheme will provide a comprehensive package of conservation works that centres upon:- Repair/renewal of roof coverings, chimney stacks, parapet detail etc- Replacement of Glazed Canopy with ‘Heritage style’ Patent Glazing System (retaining contemporary trusses)- Repair/ renewal of Edwardian shopfront and shop surrounds- Repair/reinstatement of glass tiling to first floor elevations- Repair/ replacement of rainwater goods with cast iron- Replacement of concrete paviors to walkway with random length pennant sandstone- Repair of decayed joinery to roof structures and first floor joists- Repair, redecoration and improvement to Communal Staircase and corridors- Installation of secure Arcade entrance gates- Connection of services where not provided and repairs to drainage- Rationalisation of wiring within the Arcade to minimise impact on the Listed Structure.- Installation of high speed fibre broadband to all units.- Repair/ reinstatement/redecoration of upper floor windows- Structural repairs arising from decay or otherwise identified in surveys to date- Internal repairs arising from decay or works to rectify above items.- Repair/replacement of masonry and brickwork detail to High Street and Market Street.- Repair/redecoration of communal stairs and corridors servicing the first floor chambersThe project will be delivered as a 'block scheme' with the Council acting as agents on behalf of participating units (17 units of 19 expected)Subject to final design development and specification the value of the contract is anticipated to be in the region of £1.3m (including contingencies)The works contract is expected to commence in June 2019 and be for a maximum duration of 14 monthsA two stage procurement process will be undertaken, with the Pre Qualification Questionnaire Stage commencing from 25th February 2019.Successful, shortlisted, companies will receive invitations to tender from 16th April 2019.Whilst the PQQ process will be advertised on Sell2wales the procurement process will be undertaken through the etenderWales portal.Those wishing to express an interest at this point should do so via the Sell2Wales portal.NOTE: To register your interest in this notice and obtain any additional information please visit the Sell2Wales Web Site at https://www.sell2wales.gov.wales/Search/Search_Switch.aspx?ID=89533.
