Mature Heather Weeding at Rifle Range SSSI

Wyre Forest District Council is seeking expressions of interest from suitably qualified contractors for the Weeding of Mature Heather at Rifle Range SSSI. The Rifle Range is a Site of Special Scientific interest, located between the towns of Kidderminster and Bewdley. The site was designated for its areas lowland heath habitat. The site suffers from encroachment by Birch, Oak and in particular Broom. Across much of the site, this can be controlled by a combination of mowing, weedwiping and heavy grazing. However, there are areas of mature heather across the reserve, with broom and birch beginning to become dominant. This cannot be managed via the mowing/weedwiping method as the age structure needs to be maintained. The purpose of these works is for the Council to be left with areas of mature heather in a condition that it can maintain in the future.
