Media Training to MAIB and RAIB
Descriptions
The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) independently investigates accidents to improve railway safety, and inform the industry and the public. It became operational in October 2005. The Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) independently investigates accidents marine accidents involving UK vessels worldwide and all vessels in UK territorial waters. It was established in 1989. All current RAIB inspectors have had media training at some point. However, they are due for refresher training and RAIB is recruiting new inspectors. Most MAIB inspectors have had media training at some point, they are also due for refresher training. Our inspectors do not routinely undertake media interviews and are unlikely to be put forward for planned appearances in the media. They are more likely to be interviewed or door-stepped at short notice at or near accident sites or inquests. In addition, some inspectors may be put forward for more detailed interviews coinciding with the publication of our findings, although national broadcast requests would more likely be fulfilled by a principal inspector, the deputy chief or the chief inspector. Our leadership teams would be the first port of call for planned interviews, whether they be at major accident sites or, further down the line, when we publish our reports and potentially safety recommendations.
