This project is about enhancement of the setting of the historic gated bridge over the river Monnow on the entrance to Monmouth.The project comprises two elements:•The preparation and implementation of works to repair and renovate remaining elements of the scheduled ancient monument, which will focus on improved public access and interpretation of this unique structure. The scheme also includes research, design and installation of interpretation panels in suitable locations on and within the historic bridge structure. Physical repair and renovation of parts of the gated bridge structure to allow improved public access and interpretation. Bridge Repair, Renovation and Interpretation are expected to cost in the region of £142,100 including direct fees.A feasibility and design study into options for sympathetic improvements to the immediate surrounds of the historic gated bridge that respect and reinforce the cultural and natural heritage of this location. The study will develop a proposal to address structures that currently conflict with the scheduled ancient monument (i.e. unsightly toilet block in close proximity), supplemented with improvements to neighbouring riverside land to enable the local community to enjoy this unique location.The design/feasibility study relates to intended environmental improvements to the immediate surrounds of the historic gated bridge, that respect and reinforce the cultural and natural heritage of this location. The study will include a breakdown of estimated costs of this element of the project only. A separate budget of £40,000 has been allocated (including fees) to this activity.
