Awarded
MVDC Convertors
Descriptions
Cardiff University is seeking to develop its Power Electronic laboratory facilities to study Medium Voltage Direct Current (MVDC). It intends to purchase two laboratory scale MVDC units in cabinets. Both Cabinet 1 and 2 include 12 three-level three-phase Neutral Point Clamped (NPC) converters and two isolating transformers, while Cabinet 1 contains two extra components, i.e., 2 DC reactors. As a result, there are 24 NPC converters, 4 isolating transformers and 2 DC reactors in total. Control units should be included in each cabinet: Each NPC should be equipped with a local microprocessor to control grid currents, and to control real and reactive power flow. Apart from 24 local controllers, a central control and management unit is required in each cabinet. The cabinets and equipment should be have appropriate safety features for laboratory testing. The procurement of the equipment specified in the ITT is timely as the university expands its research in MVDC. The laboratory will enable realistic studies, analysis, and understanding of representative systems to be investigated in future years.
