UK Government have identified the need to maintain an agile and flexible R&D capability to ensure that informed decisions can be made regarding the role of nuclear energy in the future UK energy system. In line with the recently published Nuclear Industrial Strategy and Nuclear Energy R&D Roadmap UK Government have established a Nuclear Innovation & Research Office (NIRO) that have provided an initial three-month programme of R&D to help address the immediate R&D priorities.The programme will address a number of themes in the nuclear energy lifecycle, identified as being of key importance and that will help inform future investment decisions for the UK nuclear community. These themes follow on from work previously undertaken by the National Nuclear Laboratory in FY1213/FY1314 and include:1. Strategic Assessment and Integration;2. Fuel Manufacture and Characterisation;3. Reactors;4. Recycle.
