New Car Park and Kiosk at Penllergare Valley Woods
Descriptions
The Penllergare Trust is a charitable trust set up in 2000 to restore and preserve for the public benefit, the designed and natural landscapes of Penllergare Valley Woods. The Trust became the lessee of Penllergare Valley Woods in 2012.Penllergare Valley Woods is a highly significant Victorian designed landscape located on the edge of Swansea. The Valley constitutes what remains of the unique picturesque landscape created by the Llewelyn family, notably John Dillwyn Llewelyn (1810-82), which exploited the natural topography on a grand scale. The landscape has survived, albeit in a severely neglected state, and today it is a popular green space for quiet recreation and enjoyment by local people. It is slowly being brought back into management by a group of volunteers, trainees and Penllergare Trust staff with funding from WEFO and the Heritage Lottery Fund. The restoration project includes a number of measures to improve the accessibility of Penllergare Valley Woods for visitors, and to enhance their understanding and enjoyment of its heritage. These include the creation of a small woodland car park and the construction of a new, split-level information kiosk with toilets and capacity for volunteer-run refreshment sales, together with a small meeting space for trainees, volunteers and other community groups. The Trust now wishes to appoint a contractor to carry out these works.
