Descriptions
The Prison Review Team and other stakeholders have identified a need for existing NIPS staff and any staff newly recruited into the organisation to receive a high standard of training. It is clear from a number of reports, including the final report from Owers (Review of Northern Ireland Prison Service : Conditions, Management and Oversight of all Prisons October 2011) that the approach that has been taken to staff training to date has been inadequate to meet the needs of the organisation. The external feedback received has been taken into account in the development of the organisation's strategic Corporate Plan for 2011-15 which clearly lays out the intention to professionalise the service through formal certification of training programmes. This is reinforced in the NIPS Business Plan for 2012-13.
