Descriptions

This is a partnership project with the Freshwater Biological Association and the Environment Agency. The project has three main aims: 1. to maintain an ‘ark’ facility for threatened English pearl mussel populations to safeguard against further local extinction, 2. to subsequently breed from captive individuals in order to release juveniles and/or encysted fish back to the wild as part of reintroduction programmes, and 3. to carry out research into rearing juvenile mussels and reintroduction techniques.
