BackgroundPeriod poverty is a challenge facing many girls in Wales and the UK. In August 2017 Plan International UK undertook a survey with 1000 girls and young women aged 14-21 years. The research found that:•10% have been unable to afford sanitary wear•15% have struggled to afford sanitary wear•12% has had to improvise sanitary wear due to affordability issues•14% had to ask to borrow sanitary wear from a friend due to affordability issues•49% of girls have missed an entire day of school because of their period, of which 59% have made up a lie or an alternate excuse.•Nearly half (48%) of girls surveyed are embarrassed by their periods.Julie James AM, Leader of the House and Chief Whip states ‘It is unacceptable that some women and girls in Wales cannot afford to buy essential feminine hygiene products when they need them’.Revenue funding has been issued by Welsh Government to each local authority in Wales from April 2018 and must be used to provide feminine hygiene products to those women and girls most in need.On behalf of Flintshire and Wrexham Councils, Flintshire County Council have sent this speculative notice in the hope of identifying suppliers who can supply the following items in bulk quantities:-1) Tampons2) Sanitary Towels3) Dispensers for the aboveWe intend to undertake a procurement exercise for award in January 2019.
