The Whitley Bay Playhouse is situated at Marine Avenue, Whitley Bay, Tyne and Wear. The Playhouse is a 638-seat single auditorium theatre which underwent redevelopment in 2008 to bring the sound, lighting, seating and customer experience up to modern standards. The site has been the basis for a theatre in the town for over 100 years and continues to be integral to the cultural and tourism offer of the area. The Authority owns the freehold of the Playhouse and surrounding car parks. The Playhouse is an integral part of the cultural plan for the Borough's services to residents of North Tyneside and it also appeals to tourists and visitors to the area. The facility also supports the activities of local amateur dramatic organisation and provides a platform for performance for a range of schools in the Borough.Key stakeholders in the Playhouse are North Tyneside Council, North Tyneside residents, local schools and local cultural organisations. The Playhouse has been managed under an Operating Agreement initiated in September 2009 and scheduled to terminate in June 25. The Authority is seeking to procure an operator to deliver services at the theatre from July 2025 for a further 15-year period.
