Procurement of Two Breast Vacuum Biopsy Systems for The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust
Descriptions
Within the RDAC Unit at Sutton we perform breast biopsies for the diagnosis of potential cancers, and excisions of both benign, and, in some cases, malignant lesions. For many of these cases it is necessary to take a larger sample of breast tissue via a vacuum-assisted biopsy (VAB) system to enable a confirmatory diagnosis. Additionally the system is employed for vacuum-assisted excisions (VAE) in which a 4g tissue sample is removed for diagnostic and therapeutic reasons. We currently have two breast vacuum biopsy systems in Sutton for this purpose in the Rapid Diagnostic Assessment Unit (RDAC) unit. The use of two units simultaneously has meant we are able to carry out breast interventional cases concurrently in both the mammogram room and the ultrasound rooms. The systems are also utilised in MRI for vacuum breast biopsies/excisions. The biopsies are performed using imaging guidance- mammography, ultrasound or MRI.
