Project 10176 - DSD - Delivery of People's History Initiative.
Descriptions
The SS Nomadic Charitable Trust was established by DSD in 2006 to restore the SS Nomadic and to make it accessible to the public, to ensure it can play a key role in the on-going celebration of the Titanic, ensure a lasting legacy to celebrate Belfast's maritime and industrial heritage and as a catalyst for tourism and social and economic development. In 2009, the Department for Social Development (DSD) through its Urban Regeneration and Community Development Group, secured GBP 2.3 million of PEACE III funding to:1. Physically restore the SS Nomadic – the last surviving floating link to the Titanic, and;2. Deliver a cross-community learning programme which will include Titanic/Nomadic linked history lectures, workshops, shared history courses and exhibitions, to promote equality and an acceptance of cultural diversityThe Ulster Peoples College (UPC) had been managing the cross-community element of this project however; it has since been placed into liquidation and has ceased trading. While stage 1 of the programme is almost complete and significant progress has been made on stage 2, GBP 195 k of the PEACE III funding is in place to complete the delivery of stage 2 – Peoples History Initiative.Resulting from this action the DSD now wishes to appoint a service provider to complete the delivery of the PHI in collaboration with the SS Nomadic Charitable Trust.
