Provision of a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM)

Descriptions

Public Health England (PHE) has awarded a contract to Carl Zeiss Ltd, for the purchase of a new Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) capable of examining biological and non-biological samples with energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy capability. This would provide for a continuation of the PHE SEM service at Porton and at Science hub Harlow in the future. The scanning electron microscope must be of the field emission gun type and be suitable for a wide range of applications e.g. clinical diagnostic investigations, biomedical research (bacteriology, virology, mycology, cell biology, parasitology, and entomology) and examination of environmental samples.Although this will be a capital purchase, it is intended that any service and support will be covered for the lifetime of the equipment or until PHE re-tenders the requirement.
