Provision of Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Carver & Service Contract
Descriptions
Cardiff & Vale’s Rehabilitation Engineering Unit (REU) is based at the ALAS Posture and Mobility Centre (PMC), which provides a Wheelchair service, Engineering Workshops & Clinics amongst others. Rehabilitation Engineering is the clinical application of engineering to provide services, research, and development to assist people with disabilities. The REU is seeking to replace their Themwood C40 3 Axis Computer Numerical Control (CNC) carver due to flood damage in February 2020 making it Beyond Economical Repair (BER). The machine is used to manufacture special seating cushions using low to medium density Polyurethane foam. The current process involves 3D scanning an impression of the client’s shape captured as a .stl mesh which is then disassembled and manipulated in the toolpath generating software (Picasoft, Mayka Ver 7.0) to generate the G-code. Once the cushion(s) are carved, they are cut and assembled manually. In the immediate term, Cardiff REU need a machine to replace the current function but aspire to have additional functionality in the CNC capability. The option to upgrade the functionality is desirable.NOTE: The authority is using eTender wales to carry out this procurement process.
