The NHS Procurement Services, hosted by Velindre NHS Trust are acting on behalf of Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Local Health Board, is looking to invite suitably qualified and experienced providers (including General Medical Practitioners) to deliver the Medical Services component of Health Care Services within Her Majesty's Prison (HMP)Swansea.Only the prison medical services are being tendered in order to provide a sustainable replacement for the locum GP's who have delivered the service for several years. The Prison's multidisciplinary health care services will continue to be managed by the Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Board who directly employ a team of registered nurses, including independent prescribers and health care support workers, as well as in-reach clinicians specialising in mental health, substance misuse, sexual health and physiotherapy. There is an onsite pharmacist and dispensing team. A Dental Team and an Optometrist hold regular surgeries in the prison too.The prison is a category B male prison with a current operational capacity of 500. It is our aim to provide the prisoners with the same level of health care that is delivered to the wider community, whilst also acknowledging their specific complex health issues. The age range of the prisoners is from 18 years upwards. The Prison experiences a high turnover of prisoners because of its category status. This results in short sentences and/or frequent transfers which ultimately can impact on treatment regimes. This environment calls for innovative approaches to managing their health needs to enable the best outcomes possible to be delivered whilst in prison, and to influence health outcomes on release.The service would be in accordance with the NHS contract regulations (a copy of which is available for inspection at the Commissioner's offices upon request). Owing to the size of the contract, there will be a formal tendering process. Once awarded, the contract will run for 3 years and will be reviewed annually.
