Provision of preparation of supervisors of midwives course

Descriptions

Healthcare Inspectorate Wales as the Local Supervising Authority for Wales, and in accordance with Nursing and Midwifery Council’s requirements, is seeking to procure an approved educational institution to deliver a course of study to prepare suitably selected, experienced midwives to become Supervisors of Midwives.Healthcare Inspectorate Wales, on behalf of the Welsh Government, require the successful contractor to deliver training to prepare student supervisors to be able to demonstrate the competencies of a supervisor of midwives set out by the NMC in Standards for the preparation and practice of supervisor of midwives. The course programme should seek to promote students’ knowledge, attitudes and skills in relation to midwifery supervision. The course should be offered at a minimum standard of first degree (or equivalent) and should be provided over a minimum consecutive period of 26 weeks. The education programme should be divided equally between practice-based learning and theory and equal credit will be given to the theory and practice assessments. It is important that the practice-based learning component provides student supervisors with opportunities to observe supervision in action and gain exposure to supervisory activities in practiceProspective providers are advised that whilst NMC approval is not require prior to submitting a tender it is suggested that any potential provider books a provisional Approval Event through the existing Quality Assurers Mott MacDonald who have been advised that tentative applications may be made but subsequently withdrawn. The provisional date should be in line with the requirement of a twelve week window; thereby the suggested date for an Approval Event would be during the first week in April. Closing date for tender applications will be Friday 27th January 2012 and the preferred provider will be notified during the week beginning 13th February 2012. If the first choice provider is unsuccessful in achieving NMC approval the second choice provider will be contacted. The approved programme provider will need to be identified to support advertising and selecting students during July and August 2012. The course should commence in late September 2012.
